The intellectual basis for the unifying framework and I-PLUS lies in the commonality of the mathematics that describes the physics of many of the modalities of interest in subsurface imaging problems. Applications as diverse as Diffuse Optical Tomography (DOT) for breast cancer and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) tomography for humanitarian demining share significant common aspects that can be abstracted, so that ideas developed in one application are readily extended into the other. Our plan for developing I-PLUS is to produce initial solutionware software modules incorporating the key algorithms which we currently use in the initial set of challenge applications, instantiated as our system testBEDs.
